Bone cells are cells in the body that help the bones exchange minerals with the rest of the body by way of the circulatory system. Different bone cells have different functions. Osteoblasts turn calcium and minerals into bone tissue. Osteocytes maintain the correct balance of proteins and minerals in the bones. Osteoclasts break down old bony tissue. Bone diseases such as bone cancer keep bones from functioning as they should.
