Personal Author EPSB

Summary
The story of postwar Dutch immigration to Canada. In the fifteen years following the end of World War II, thousands of Dutch people waved goodbye to their families, friends, past lives and possessions, boarded a ship, and made the long voyage across the ocean to Canada. The movement arose out of a long-occupied country whose citizens considered Canadians their liberators, out of tiny Holland's limited capacity for growth, and out of the uneasy political situation in Europe. This book describes in numerous details the process of wanting to leave one's home and extended family, to making preparations for emigrating, to saying farewell, embarking on ships which in some cases were nothing more than troop transport ships, the misery of seasickness, to sighting land and stepping off the boat for new adventures on foreign soil, among people who spoke a different language and had "strange" traditions and ways. Starting afresh on foreign soil means overcoming obstacles. The Dutch faced many of those! Anyone who reads this book will deeply appreciate the courage of parents and grandparents, and their generation.
