The 20th century brought two wars that changed the lives of millions of people in countries around the globe, as well as the long ideological conflict known as the Cold War. The century also saw the dismantling of the great European empires, as people in Africa and Asia claimed independence. Global economic activity and technological advance, however, ensured the fates of individual nations remained closely tied together.
