God in government
Summary:
This documentary, "God in Government" explores the complex relationship between religion and politics in the contemporary world. Since the late 1970's, religion has emerged as a potent force in public life. The world has seen the resurgence of the Christian Right in the United States, Islamic revolution in Iran, the rise of Hindu nationalism in India and the influence of Orthodox Jews on daily life in Israel. Now, at the start of the 21st century, there are frequent examples in the U.S. and elsewhere of the ways in which religion and politics can be a volatile combination; their entanglement can limit human rights and civil liberties, and lead to social unrest and even violence. With insightful contributions from leading academics, politicians and activists, including Madeleine Albright, Fareed Zakaria, and Rep. Henry Waxman, among many others, this documentary clarifies the issues and illuminates the debate. Against a backdrop of political campaigns and religious celebrations, God in Government reveals how the interplay of religion and politics affects the decisions made by domestic and global leaders, and plays out in the lives of ordinary citizens here and around the world.
