Gentleman farmer, Gilbert Markham, falls in love with his new neighbour, Helen Graham, a widow who is living with her young son, Arthur, in Wildfell Hall. Her youth, beauty, and lack of satisfactory explanation of her past soon causes gossip which verges on scandal after visits from her landlord are discovered. In a fit of Jealous rage, Gilbert then violently assaults her landlord.
