Canada in the 20th century: Vol. 3: Identity crisis & the rise of Quebec, 1953-1982
Summary:
This volume is titled, "Identity crisis", for that is what characterized Canada in the third quarter of the 20th century. For three decades the question perplexed us. Were we in essence and attitude still British - or were we now American - or some unique bicultural or multicultural hybrid? It was a time of soul-searching. In all areas of Canada, including Quebec, the challenge became to establish why and how to continue as a single entity. The need to reconcile the past and future, region with region and culture with culture became a political, economic and constitutional struggle that began in the 1950s and climaxed with the National Energy Program and the Queen's proclamation of the new Canadian Constitution in 1982.
