Leslie McFarlane--better known to millions of Hardy Boys fans as Franklin W. Dixon--began his Depression-era career as an enterprising but miserably poor reporter, journalist and sometimes novelist. Since his work on the series never earned enough to make ends meet, the avid hockey fan supplemented his income by writing hockey stories for magazines.
