Eddie has lost his memory and believes himself to be someone called Neddy. Taken in by monks with appalling dress sense -- hence the title -- he's also forgotten that his father, Mr. Dickens, has been the victim of his own accident (a fallen chimney pot). Things are further confused by the not-so-famous engineer Fandango Jones's suspicions of skulduggery and foul play.
