Nine-year-old Michiko Minagawa bids her father goodbye in March, 1942, not knowing the government has ordered all Japanese-born men out of Vancouver, and it is not until her entire family is forced to move to the interior of British Columbia and she is enrolled at a new school that she learns the truth about her situation.
