Known foremost as the father of Surrealist painting, he created images--haunting, mysterious, and whimsical--that inspired movements from Dada to Abstract Expressionism. His work was often innovative in technique and created the first "drip" painting in 1942. He was bathed with honors and success when he returned to Paris after spending the war years in America.
