Ten-year-old Daniel Sempere discovers a rare novel in his widow father's antique bookstore which is entitled "The shadow of the window by Julian Carax. In the background of the story a strangely disfigured man burns every copy of Carax's novels. Puzzled by this, a maturing Daniel immerses himself in the mystery of the burnings and encounters murder, intrigue, and love on his quest.
