Thirteen-year-old Ailish, an Irish fortune-teller, is forced to disguise herself as a boy when she becomes trapped aboard the "Great Eastern" during its voyage to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable, but she finds help in dealing with her situation from Davy, a pale boy who lives below decks.
