This video consists of three distinct segments. The first segment, 'Struggles for Power', highlights the growth and evolution of absolute power and the battle for territory, using the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and its succession of leaders Julius Casear, Augustus and Tiberius as an example. The second segment, 'Down Came the Wall', provides a concise discussion of authoritarian and communist East Germany and capitalist and democratic West Germany, and the division of the city of Berlin between the two countries in late 1949. As West Germanyś economy grew and the standard of living continually improved, many East Germans wanted to move to West Germany. Consequently, the inner German border between the two German states was closed and a barbed-wire fence was erected. In 1961, a permanent wall, known as the Berlin Wall, was constructed, symbolizing the ideological division of the two countries. The wall came down in 1989 and the reunification of Germany began. The third segment, 'Apartheid Takes Hold', is a succinct documentary about the policy of racial segregation in South Africa known as Apartheid. It outlines the development of the African National Congress in 1912 as a nonviolent movement that aimed for rights and equality. The challenges faced by members and supporters over the decades until the end of Apartheid in 1989 are presented.
