Eleven-year-old Solomon flees from his Georgia plantation, avoids the slave catchers, and reaches the border separating the United States from Canada, but when his only remaining relative, Grandpa Jacob, is injured and unable to survive the crossing, Solomon must find the strength to make the journey alone.
