Thirteen-year-old Tom Carroll takes on a job to help support his family since his father was killed fighting for the Union during the Civil War. He becomes an assistant to the inventor of the iron ship called the Monitor and ends up volunteering to fight against the Confederate's iron ship, the Merrimac.
