Marit, a newly wed and widowed English woman, decides to remain on the family farm in South Africa in the 1970s in spite of escalating violence between whites and blacks, aided only by eighteen-year-old black servant Tembi, a young woman whose initial friendship with Marit eventually deteriorates in the atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust.
