Blood cells are cells in the body that carry nutrients and oxygen to other cells and remove waste. Blood is made up of red and white blood cells and platelets that are carried in a liquid called plasma. Blood is pumped through the body by the heart and a series of blood vessels that make up the circulatory system. Blood diseases such as sickle cell anemia and HIV can keep blood cells from functioning the right way.
