Canada celebrates its 100th birthday and a new flag, the Maple Leaf, flies over the land. Canadians flocked to Expo 67 and Paul Henderson's winning goal against the Russians is a touchstone experience for Canadians. But under the surface, people are searching for a national identity. Counter-culture, finding expression in the hippie movement with marijuana and free love, has a profound effect on politics, business and the arts. Quebec seethes, and Canada is rocked by the October Crisis. All eyes are on Quebec's angry nationalist movement. Along comes a dynamic leader, Pierre Trudeau, promising a "just society". Trudeaumania sweeps the country and the country sweeps in change. Canada becomes bilingual, medicare is introduced, a dynamic women's movement emerges, and credit cards become common. By 1972, Canadians are trying to convert youthful hopes and dreams into reality and the search for a national identity enters a new phase. These documentary style programs weave together Canada's history since the end of World War II. Using archival footage from the CBC, NFB and private collections, music from the period, and authoritative narration of Canada's modern history, included are such major themes as: Canadian-American relations, Canada and the world, and Canadian political, economic and socio-cultural life.
