Kit and Tara woke soon after their mother left. Having slept most of the day, they were full of energy. The two raccoons crawled under the screen of branches at the entrance. Bent on play, they stepped into the open. They didn't notice that the forest was unusually quiet. Even the crickets had stopped singing.
