At sixteen the narrator, who is never named, follows her bright, fearless friend Clara into the "labyrinth," only to see her friend torn apart by monsters--and now she, who has always lived in the shadows and avoided attention, must try to survive this living nightmare alone, knowing that nobody has ever returned from the labyrinth.
